Community Partnership - Volunteer Opportunity
The Department of Spanish & Portuguese Studies has joined with Jefferson Community School in Minneapolis to provide volunteer opportunities Fall Semester 2008.
Jefferson Community School is a K-8 public school, located on Hennepin and 26th, at which about half of the student populations speaks Spanish at home. Children have a wide range of English language skills, and a dedicated teaching staff works hard with these great kids. But with district budget cuts, the school can use the help of conscientious volunteers willing to make a commitment.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to:
-Work with students in small groups in class at all grade levels;
-Mentor small groups of students for their History Day projects;
-Create accurate and correct bilingual materials for communicating with parents;
-Read to students in Spanish;
-Volunteer to help out on Family nights, with book fairs, etc;
-Create and teach an after-school activity or class;
