General Requirements for Spanish Minors
Preparatory Courses and Testing
- Span 1001-1004 (or substitute 1014 or 1044 for 1054) with a C- or better
- The requirement is to pass all sections of the LPE, but we recommend a High Pass on all four sections in order to assure success in Span 3015 and beyond. (For more information, visit Language Program Information/LPE & Testing Program )
Required Courses
- 5 course for a total of 16-17 credits.
1. Advanced Language
to be taken successively
- Span 3015: Spanish Composition and Communication (4 credits)
*Span 3015 must be taken by itself and not in conjunction with any other Spanish classes. It is a prerequisite to all upper division Spanish courses. If a B- or higher is earned, students have the option of taking Span 3021 or advancing to the Critical Analysis Courses and substituting Span 3021 with 3-4 elective credits.
- Span 3021: Advanced Communication Skills (4 credits)
*Span 3021 may be substituted with 3-4 approved elective credits if the student earned a B- or higher. If a C range grade or lower is earned in Span 3015, then students must take Span 3021 by itself and not in conjunction with other Spanish Classes. Then if a C- or higher is earned in Span 3021, students may advance to the Critical Analysis Courses.
2. Critical Analysis Courses
must take at least two of the following:
- Span 3104: Analysis and Interpretation of Texts (3 credits)
- Span 3105: Introduction to the Study of Hispanic Cultures (3 credits)
- Span 3107: Introduction to the Study of Hispanic Linguistics (3 credits)
The Critical Analysis Courses must be completed with a C- or higher in order to continue to the Advanced Elective Courses. They use Spanish as a medium for focusing on critical analysis of texts (Span 3104), cultures (Span 3105) and Hispanic linguistics (Span 3017). Provided that prerequisites are met, these may be taken simultaneously or one by one, and need not all be completed before advancing to the Advanced Elective Courses. Keep in mind, however, that they are prerequisites for some of the Advanced Elective Courses (i.e. Span 3104 is a prerequisite for all upper division literature courses, Span 3105 for all upper division culture classes and Span 3107 for all upper division linguistics classes).
3. Advanced Elective Courses
- (3-6 credits)
Advanced Elective Courses must be at the 3XXX level and in order to obtain credit, all prerequisites must be met. At least three (3) credits must have a Critical Analysis prerequisite. It is possible that the remaining one Critical Analysis Course above, provided two were taken to meet the basic requirement, may be taken to fulfill the minor requirements.
- Students who qualified to substitute Span 3021 for an elective course, and did so, must take a total of 6 Credits
- Students who did not qualify to substitute Span 3021 – or who took Span 3021 by choice – only need to take a total of 3 elective credits.
