Entrance Proficiency Test (EPT) Placement & Prerequisites for Language Classes

FAQs:

IS THERE AN EPT FOR PORTUGUESE? Currently there is not an EPT for Portuguese. If you are concerned about the level at which you should begin Portuguese classes, please contact the main office .

For more information, please visit the Testing Program or call 612-624-0862.

HOW MANY TIMES CAN I TAKE THE EPT? You may take the EPT only once.

WHAT IS THE LPE? If you believe you are past the Spanish 1004 level, you can take the Language Proficiency Exam. If you have any questions as to your ability and level, we suggest that you take the EPT.

What are the prerequisites for Spanish? Spanish 1001: YOU DO NOT NEED TO TAKE THE EPT IF YOU WISH TO TAKE SPANISH 1001. You only need to take it if you have not taken Spanish or Portuguese at the University of Minnesota and you wish to start in Span 1003 or higher. This course is designed for students who have never been exposed, or had very limited exposure, to the Spanish Language. If you have had less than 2 levels of high school Spanish and are interested in taking 1001, you must get a magic number from the main office in 34 Folwell. Permission numbers will be given starting the first day of registration for the entire University. Please bring a copy of your high school transcript.

Spanish 1002: In order to register for 1002, you MUST have taken Spanish 1001 at the University of Minnesota. Only students that have taken Spanish 1001 will get permission numbers from the Course Level Supervisor, Cecily Brown, at brown016@umn.edu.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SPAN 1002 and 1022? Spanish 1001 is a Beginning Spanish, as is 1002. You CANNOT take Spanish 1002 unless you have taken Spanish 1001 at the University of Minnesota. However, if you have had some exposure to the Spanish Language, but still consider yourself a beginner, then you should start with Spanish 1022. No permission number or entrance test is required for Spanish 1022.

Spanish 1022: YOU DO NOT NEED TO TAKE THE EPT IF YOU WISH TO TAKE SPANISH 1022. You only need to take it if you have not taken Spanish or Portuguese at the University of Minnesota and you wish to start in Span 1003 or higher. This course is designed for students who have had some high school Spanish or one semester of college Spanish. This is the Alternate Second Semester Spanish and covers all 1002 materials and also provides an intensive review of structures taught in 1001. It is designed to serve as a refresher course and can be taken in place of Span 1002 (for those that took Span 1001 at the University).
