Spanish 1022 (Technology-enhanced)

A technology-enhanced version of the course is offered every semester. The technology-enhanced sections cover the same material and are tested in the same fashion as the regular 1022. The course expectations and grading are the same. These sections require the student to do a considerable amount of independent learning outside of the classroom facilitated by on-line materials.

Spanish 1003

This course is for students who have completed Spanish 1022 or 1002 with C- or better, OR who have taken two or more years of Spanish in high school and have successfully passed the Entrance Proficiency Test (EPT) for this level.

Reminder: You only have to take the EPT if you have not taken Spanish 1002 or 1022 at the University of Minnesota, or if you are a transfer student. Students taking the EPT will need proof they have been placed in 1003 by bringing documentation of their EPT scores the first day of class. All other students must bring an unofficial copy of their transcript the first day of class.

In this course, students build on the communicative speaking, writing, listening and reading skills that were acquired in beginning Spanish. The "Conexiones" series, text, lab manual and workbook, and student listening CDs are used. Class activities are carried out almost entirely in Spanish. For the most part, grammar should be studied at home as only a small percentage of class time is intended for grammar instruction and practice.

Reading skills are developed through authentic cultural readings included in the text. Writing skills are developed through a variety of writing assignments including brief free writing assignments, short compositions and peer editing practice. Culture, understood as the perspectives, practices and products of a society, is learned through the readings, songs, artwork, and literature in the text. Oral participation in Spanish is critical to this course, and students are expected to converse in Spanish during the entire class period.

Each student will give an oral presentation on a topic related to those covered in "Conexiones" or in class. Students will have a one-on-one interview in Spanish with the instructor during the last weeks of the semester. Because Spanish class is about the only place where a student can practice listening and speaking, class attendance is critical, and the instructor will hold students accountable to the department’s attendance policy.
